Altstadt is a German word meaning “Old Town”. The old town is the main tourist center of Zurich. A trip to Altstadt will take you to the ancient Roman, which still there are treasure troves of historic buildings. It is solely a good and convincing reason to travel to the ancient city of Zurich!
Old Town is the historic heart of the city of Zurich. This place creates a different atmosphere in the city, relying on nineteenth-century buildings and its paved alleys. Hosting the shops, galleries and modern cafes adds to the attractiveness of the area. This neighborhood is located on the sides of the Limmat River with many old town houses of Zurich and other major tourist attractions.
The western half of Altstadt is where the Romans build their residential area, the towers, and their castle. Lindenhof fortress, despite its monuments and shady trees, is one of the most beautiful parts of the city. From the terrace of this castle you can see the beautiful views of the Old Town. In the eastern part of Altstadt, next to the river, there are old and very sophisticated streets. In these streets, there are historic buildings of the nineteenth century with a beautiful view, a set of small shops, restaurants and several famous religious-historical places, make a spectacular view of the city.
The two most important churches in Zurich, Fraumuenster, which belongs to medieval period and the gothic-style church, Grossmuenster are located here. The two churches are facing the opposite side and connected to the historic bridge of Munster.
For the tourists coming to Zurich, the old town is an ideal starting point for exploring the city. This neighborhood is full of medieval buildings, Renaissance town halls, restaurants and specialty cafes and little shops. In addition, in stylish restaurants and cozy and charming cafes with special decoration you can enjoy the most delicious Swiss dishes like the famous “Swiss Cheese Fondue” or the “Zurich Geschnetzeltes”.
