Mount Pilatus is full of myths. This beautiful mountain, located outside of the city of Lucerne (Pilatus), features breathtaking views of the Alps. From the city of Lucerne, you can reach the top of the mountain and watch the magnificent view of the Alps.
Today, climbing Pilatus is one of Switzerland’s most popular recreational activities. This mountain is one of the most legendary parts of central Switzerland. It has been named as the dragons’ niche, the Giants’ house and the graves of rulers in many stories. The name of the mountain comes from the rumor that the famous Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, who may have been buried in this mountain. Europeans in the Middle Ages believed that this mountain was formed as a dragon rock that fell from the sky. Villagers believed that the evil spirit of Pontius Pilate was still in the mountain and prevented people from reaching to the summit with the threat of imprisonment. For this reason, during the medieval times, the residents of Lucerne, banned travel to the top of the mountain.
If you want to climb mountains, after riding a train with a 48-degree rail slope, you can climb to the top of the legendary Pilatus mountains. This route is one of the steepest railroads in the world. If you plan to go up the mountain in the winter, consider that the railways are hidden under the snow, you should use the cable cars, which is an exciting experience for many tourists. Regarding the weather, we recommend to visit Pilatus early in the morning, because often in the afternoons the clouds and fog hide beautiful views.
You will be amazed when you arrive at the summit. The summit of 2100 meters offers views of the Swiss and French Alps, as well as the Lake Lucerne. On sunny days, Mount Pilatus exhibit a 360-degree glimpse of 73 Alpine peaks. In the winter, the Christmas market is at high altitudes. In summer, Pilatus offers great opportunities for hiking and climbing. You can also enjoy an array of clean air above the mountain.
There are also two mountainous hotels on the top of the mountain, which offer fantastic views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountains. So, if you want to spend a few days in this area, book your hotel in advance and have a good time there.
